第16回の今回は、Hani Andary "American's value for personal opinion" への評です。

Today, the value called 'innovative' or 'creative', is all American. Even in Japan are called the concepts by English (more correctly, 'American') words. Such concepts, directing us to the future, could conceal it from our sight what we actually mean by the words. As to the concept 'value for personal opinion' again, I could not help being afraid of the blinding power of the concept.
Hani's essay would be exactly the attempt to reveal what we can think about the value for personal opinion. What is needed for us who have already known the importance of the value, may not be simply to envy the value, or cling to the value, but to grasp the value. We have to return to the point where the predecessors gained the value, and face to the passion of them.
You cannot remain a student in the classroom, where the value is taken for granted.

In the past three years I passed in Europe, I found myself the way of thinking that Japanese think as the typical one of the Western world is American. Although I have never been to the US and have few friends there, it is easy to imagine that what Hani observed over there should be true.
What interests me most is how American people themselves who have never left their homeland recognize their way of thinking, and what they think about the Dutch one. As a Japanese who had lived in Amsterdam for a while, I assume Dutch people look very similar to American.
I am looking forward to Hani’s next writing going further on it, as well as the one discussed by some of my Japanese friends more from their personal point of view than basing on knowledge, for I saw too many things already and cannot say my opinion is Japanese.
